The 40-Second Play Clock

As in the past, has partnered with to look at the impact of rule changes intended to shorten the length of college football games. The data from week 1 of the 2008 season is in, and so far both the number of plays and the time of game have been reduced compared to 2007.

Shorter Games, Fewer Plays

The average plays per game is down from 2007, but not quite down to the 2005 level. The average length of games is near the 2005 level.

This was just the first week of games, so the numbers can change. We’ll keep tracking them as the season moves along.
